This lot is part of an exceedingly rare complete four-piece set of original 8-Backs issued at launch. The set was purchased at retail in Philadelphia, PA in the early 1980’s and preserved by the original owner’s father. According to the son, his father’s childhood toys were thrown out and given away, so he made sure to keep this collection preserved for his own children. Presented is a rare, first release factory sealed Wind Raider from Series One. This vehicle was released alongside the test market 8-back figures, Battle Cat, Castle Grayskull, and the Battle Ram vehicle as part of the initial offering and debut of the Masters of the Universe toyline. Similar to a canvas in texture, the box quality on this piece is simply amazing with only minor imperfections. In fact, this is the highest graded example we have ever offered in our auctions. Please note, that an AFA 85 Battle Ram 8-Back set a record in February of this year when it sold for $20,920.
Seasoned collectors know there is quite a difference not only in rarity, but in box features between this early release 8-back and the 12-back. First, rarity: according to our experts, the 8-Backs make up only approximately 10% of the Wind Raider supply. Second, the nuanced differences that veteran collectors love are present: the bottom of the box is completely black in color, there is only one Masters logo on the front, and the reverse displays only eight characters. We expect lots of action on this lot as October 29th draws closer – MOTU is on fire, and this is the first AFA 85 Wind Raider 8-Back to hit the market in many years!
