According to the latest population data, only 9 examples have been graded in the 20+ year history of AFA (with only one graded higher).

One of the most sought-after pieces in the entire SLU toyline is the elusive 1996 “Asian” Magic Johnson. Magic made his return to the NBA in January 1996 after a four-and-a-half-year hiatus.  According to Beckett Magazine, the 1996 Magic Johnson SLU wasn’t supposed to exist.  It was intended to be a prototype, but some pieces made their way into cases in Asia.

The eye appeal of this piece is splendid.  The card front is as good as it gets with perfect color free from edgewear, creases, and veins.  The back of the card is strong as well with only a light vein running through the Milwaukee Bucks logo.  The bubble is clear and retains perfect form throughout.  The inner tray has a slight tint resulting in a technical Y, but the piece certainly presents as clear.  The two upper front corners exhibit a bit of wrinkling resulting in the harsh 75 subgrade.  The action figure within is nearly flawless.  Overall, a beauty with stronger appeal than two of the three subgrades suggest! Both SLU and crossover collectors will certainly have their eyes on this rare gem as we approach March 24th. Please note a very small fracture to the lower back corners of the acrylic casing.
