One of the most important and ubiquitous inventions of our lifetime, the iPhone was first introduced by Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007 at MacWorld San Francisco. Just over five months later it was released at retail for $499/$599 on June 29th. The original iPhone included 4GB/8GB of storage, an innovative touchscreen, a 2-megapixel camera, and a web browser. The iconic box featured a life-size image of the iPhone with 12 icons on the screen. It quickly became Apple’s most successful product, forever changed the smartphone industry, and was named the Time Magazine Invention of the Year in 2007.
The original 4GB model is considered a “Holy Grail” amongst iPhone collectors. Its extreme scarcity is directly related to its limited production. Debuting on June 29th, 2007, alongside the 8GB model, the 4GB model was hampered by slow sales. Buyers chose to pay the $100 upcharge in exchange for double the storage space. The lagging sales resulted in Apple making the decision to discontinue the 4GB model on September 5th, 2007, just over two months after it was first released.
The 4GB model appears to have the potential of a “blue chip” collectible. Extremely rare, when one finally surfaced at auction in Summer 2023, it realized a record price of $190,373. The record shattering LCG sale received widespread media coverage from major outlets including, ABC News, CNN, and Fox Business. A second 4GB model surfaced in the LCG Fall Premier Auction in October 2023 and realized an impressive price of $133,435. Finally, the most recent example sold in an LCG Auction came close to matching the previous sale as it realized $130,027 in March of 2024.
Our offering is identical to the record breaking model sold in July of 2023 - it’s a first-release 4GB model in outstanding factory sealed condition. It was consigned to us directly by the original owner. He has included a notarized letter of provenance with the unit. The phone is in great condition with the only imperfection of note being a bit of surface wear on the face of the seal that is visible in the photographs provided. The unit is fully factory sealed with correct seam details and tightness. There are no rips or tears in the seal. The only penetration of the box through the seal is at the very tip of the sharp corners (this is common with nearly every model we have handled) – a pin hole in size. Outstanding color and gloss. Brand new, never activated.
