One of the most coveted VHS tapes in the entire hobby, we are pleased to offer an ultra-rare FIRST PRINT copy of Ghostbusters from 1985. This was the first theatrical blockbuster that made it’s VHS debut only months after appearing in theaters. Other hit movies from the era (Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, etc.) were not released on VHS until years after first appearing in theaters. First Ghostbusters, followed shortly by Back to the Future - it was these two films that pioneered the formula of the VHS release immediately after the theatrical run. It’s no surprise that their first print copies are two of the most valuable and sought after tapes of the 1980’s.
The Ghostbusters VHS debuted in 1985 at a whopping retail price of $79.99. The exorbitant price point helps explain why the first print is so difficult to find in factory sealed condition – those that purchased it, opened, and watched it (as was intended). The first print is distinct from subsequent releases with unique features appealing to high-end tape collectors. The first print includes a RAISED LOGO on front. This large, embossed Ghostbusters logo is a feature that later releases don’t have. Second, are the white “waterfall” RCA Columbia Home Video watermarks found on the reverse. Other features of note are a full box (not a slipcover), TDK tape, and UPC found on the bottom. Beautiful red border with a deep black & red color combo makes for an ultra-attractive display piece. The assigned grade of this factory sealed gem is an impressive double “8” (albeit we feel it’s undergraded). Overall, a very exciting piece and one of the most important VHS tapes in the hobby. As such, we expect it to be a popular choice amongst collectors as we approach July 16th.
