Original mock-up prototype (1:1) used by Kenner in their sales pitch to DC Comics in late 1982. The prototype was featured on the cover of Action Figure Digest, and has been conclusively photomatched.

Kenner, along with other toylines, were in competition for the DC license at the time. Action Figure Digest recounts the story. They interviewed five ex-Kenner employees who were involved with the presentation.

From Issues 24 & 87:

Kenner made the original pitch for a super hero line to DC Comics in late 1982. Other bidders for the license included Mattel and Knickerbocker.

The original concept presented was “DC presents Super Heroes with Super Power Feature” as shown on the (Superman) prototype card used. They got the deal by talking about – but never demonstrating – any of the proposed “Super Powers Features” The key was a knock out package design which appealed to art-oriented DC decision makers. It was a package for the Superman figure which had traditionally been DC’s strongest selling character.

Kenner’s DC superhero concept ultimately became the Super Powers toyline, debuting in 1984.

Our offering features unique pre-production characteristics: blue ink on surface in certain areas, character images pasted to card surface, hand-glued blister, handmade and hand-painted action figure, logos pasted to card surface, white cardboard backing.

An important piece of toy history, the only one of its kind. First time at auction. The winner will also receive the original copies of Action Figure Digest.
