The Luke Skywalker 12-Back released by Kenner in 1978 is, without a doubt, the most recognizable action figure of all time. In our hobby, it’s the icon of icons.
Just over 3 years ago, the all-time record for a production action figure was set when an AFA 90 Luke Skywalker with DT Saber realized a six-figure sale of $100,251. The piece was prominently featured in mainstream media on Fox News and other outlets, click here to watch the Fox News segment. The record sale set a new bar, raising interest in high-end Star Wars collectibles. Recently, in May of this year, the record was finally broken as a 1978 Darth Vader w/ DT Saber (AFA 80) realized an impressive $130,095.
Our offered example is one of two found at the AFA 90 grade level, with none graded higher. We have now handled both AFA 90 DT 12 Back-C examples, and despite equivalent technical grades, it’s our opinion that our current offering is superior. First, the surface of the card is all-original, exactly how it appeared when it left the distributor, unpunched and free from the addition of 3rd party price tag stickers. In addition to the unsurpassed AFA 90 grade, what makes this example truly special is the fully extended DT lightsaber that is visible within the package. This anomaly is unexplained, and we could only find one other example of this feature in the online auction archives made public by the major auction houses (our search included all three characters featuring DT saber: Luke, Vader, Ben Kenobi). Regarding condition, our offering is virtually flawless. All-original, the 47-year-old card exhibits vibrant color with no fading or edgewear. Few imperfections to be found. The card is unpunched with no price tag sticker. Additionally, there is no sticker residue or sticker imprint. The bubble is crystal clear and retains perfect form with no sign of bubble lift whatsoever. The action figure itself is in mint condition and features a white robe/shirt free of discoloration. No frosting. The ever-important double telescoping lightsaber highlights the presentation. The DT saber is fully extended and visible within the package. It's truly an anomaly, and befitting of the highest graded example. An incomparable example, one that will garner serious attention from hard-core collectors and investors alike.
