Perhaps the most highly anticipated lot in the 5-year history of LCG Auctions. We are pleased to present an original factory sealed FIRST RELEASE Megatron from 1984. This marks the first time this decade that a first release example (in any grade) has been offered publicly. Our offering is an exceptional AFA 85 “investment grade” example.
The original Megatron toy is Walther P38 WWII German handgun. Today, this toy is on a list of banned items on planes in the U.S., and a special license is required to own this toy in Australia. Due to changing societal norms, it is doubtful an item like this will ever be made again. To add to the lore, Megatron is among the franchise's most iconic characters and a widely recognized villain in popular culture. The character has appeared on a variety of merchandise, such as toys, clothing and collectible items, theme park attractions, and more. In fact, Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions derived his nickname from the character.
We are pleased to present a gorgeous investment grade example of one of the hobby’s most cherished pieces. Instantly recognizable box art with deep color enrich this seemingly factory fresh piece. All of the necessary attributes are present. No rubsign sticker to be found on the toy itself and TM (instead of R “®” as seen on subsequent releases) attached to the TRANSFORMERS logo on the box verify it as the ultra-elusive first-release “prerub”. Box showcases brilliant color throughout as well as a clean surface free from price tag sticker or sticker residue/imprint. Few imperfections. Those we identified are on the periphery. No flapcrease on the reverse. The ever-important tape seal adorns both ends - no colorbreak whatsoever along either of the front edges. Display window is crystal clear showcasing a mint condition Megatron within. Aesthetically strong with few observable blemishes and freshly re-cased in January for optimal display; AFA has assigned this factory sealed beauty an overall grade of 85. Following the collectibles formula that states desirability times scarcity equals value, one can certainly understand why records may fall when this treasured piece hits the auction block.
