Kenner's Early Bird Action Figures Set was a unique offering for Kenner's solution to the challenge of getting action figures to market for the 1977 holiday season. The set was promoted through television and various print media and was made available via a mail-away certificate inside the Early Bird envelope.
Rather innovatively, Kenner sold an envelope containing several items, most notably a redeemable certificate. Upon mailing, customers would later receive the first set of four action figures: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Artoo-Detoo. Accompanying the figures were pegs to secure them to the cardboard stand found in the Early Bird envelope. Additionally, the mailed set encompassed a plastic tray, a catalog, and a flyer for Kenner's second mail-in item, the 12-figure Action Display stand.
Within this set, two versions of the Luke figure were released: one equipped with the early "double-telescoping" lightsaber and another with a standard one-piece saber. Here we have an exceptionally high-grade DT variant Luke with a SW-C baggie and large catalog, referred to as a transition set (transitioning to the non DT saber). Highly desirable!
